Novatel’s 3G Mifi 2200 router

Sprint has announced that it plans to launch the Novatel MiFi 2200 intelligent hotspot, a WiFi router with a 3G mobile broadband connection that allows users to access the Internet on WiFi-enabled devices while on-the-go.

Users will be able to connect up to five laptops, MP3 players and gaming devices to Sprint's EV-DO Rev. A mobile broadband network. The network carrier will also support MiFi's GPS capabilities, which will allow users to utilize location-based services through the hotspot.

Has enabled its GPS functionality and is offering a Simply Everything plan for $149.99/month that includes 5GB of data and presumably unlimited minutes. The carrier will also offer a $59.99/month plan that will include 5GB of data. When it launches next month expect to drop $99.99 after a 2-year contract signing and $50 mail-in-rebate.

Apple Brick

Here’s hoping that Apple’s feverishly-anticipated “Brick” project is the world’s first all-screen laptop — like this mockup of the OLPC version 2 by designer Yves Behar.

There’s slim chance, of course, but I for one would love a computing device like this: A hybrid iPhone-meets-Macbook-Air that would put hot netbooks like the EeePC to shame.

Apple’s “Brick” would be a hybrid laptop/tablet/ebook that dispenses with a physical keyboard and trackpad in favor of a virtual, adaptive UI that blends multitouch, gestures and its own orientation to switch between different modes:

Laptop — When the Brick is held horizontally with the two screens at an angle, the bottom screen turns into a virtual keyboard and touchpad. There’s no tactile feedback for touch typists, but never mind, corrective text handily makes up for the myriad errors. The top screen acts like a regular laptop screen, except that it also is touch sensitive, and is responsive to multitouch gestures like double-tap to zoom, pinching and scrolling.

Tablet — When the two halves are opened fully they snap together in the middle to make a tablet with a continuous touch-sensitive screen. This mode is best for surfing the web, browsing and editing photos, and displaying mind-altering music visualizers.

Nokia N97

The Nokia N97 wouldn't be such a disappointing device if it weren't supposed to be the flagship multimedia smartphone for the largest handset manufacturer in the world. It has some great specs, including that impressive 32GB of storage (expandable to 48GB), a solid, smart design, and hefty battery power. The performance of the Nokia N97 is based purely on the demo version but I have to say I'm quite impressed. It looks like Nokia has fine tuned the Symbian OS to work well with touchscreen. On the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, you won't get much of the swiping and flicking finger action but they've refined it so that you can get that much out of the Nokia N97. Also, compared with the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic demo version, the Nokia N97 interface is quite fast and responsive. You can barely see any hiccup on the accelerometer transition or when you're navigating the Symbian OS. The user interface on the Nokia N97 is also quite new but is still very user-friendly. Like I said, it's touch optimized and there are a lot of widgets you can play with. The built-in browser also looks promising though I wasn't able to see if it supports YouTube desktop PC version. Scrolling through webpages isn't as smooth and fluid as when you're surfing the Safari Browser on the iPhone but the webpages renders quickly though I don't know if that's because the pages that the person demonstrating the phone is already saved and bookmarked on the phone's memory.

The Nokia N97 also supports TV Out, WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, GPS, FM radio, and a 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics. If the camera on the Nokia N97 is as good as that on the Nokia N95 then I'm sure that the Nokia N97 won't have any problems when it comes to its camera software. The Nokia N97 runs on Quadband GSM networks and supports 3G/HSDPA.

Apple has just released a 3.0 version of its Remote App that now supports controls for Apple TV. It also features gestured moves that allow you to control your Apple TV with greater accuracy. Sources report that the app dramatically improves the flexibility of the Apple TV controls allowing you to move the screen on your phone and search using the keyboard. I also just wanted to mention that the Remote App is really cool to use in a wireless iTunes scenario. My buddy can set his iTunes to Party DJ and I can roll through and make song requests on my iPhone using his library. Size and weights this laptop is 14.2 x 10.3 x 1.4 inches and 6.6 lbs (2.96 kg. The 15.4 inch WXGA (1280 x 800) res. isn't the highest resolution but certainly looks good on the frameless VibrantView LCD display. The right side of the unit holds a headphone, and microphone port, one USB 2.0 port, FireWire, DVD-RW/CD-RW, and a modem jack.

The left side of the Y530 holds two USB 2.0 ports, an HDMI, Ethernet, S-Video, VGA, and the power chord port. The front comes with a sensor for the optional remote, the wireless on or off switch, an ExpressCard slot and a 6-in-1 memory card reader, and holds 3 LED status lights of blue, orange and purple (power, battery, wireless). In the back of the Y530 is a 5 bar orange glowing LED of which shows the battery status. Interestingly enough this can also be seen from the front when the screen is extended all the way.

Super Talent Technology launched a new line of MasterDrive SX SSDs that incorporate 128MB of DRAM cache and reach new performance levels in high performance laptops. The MasterDrive SX is based on an advanced new 8-channel controller and MLC NAND Flash. Its 8-channel architecture combined with a hefty 128MB of DRAM cache takes full advantage of the 3Gbps SATA-II bandwidth.
