Samsung is going to introduce Android-smartphone Hercules. The official premiere of the next Samsung smartphone will held on September 26 this year, at least, the information contained in the roadmap of T-Mobile says so.

According to new data, Samsung Hercules gets 4.5-inch touch screen with resolution of 480 x 800 pixels, made using Super AMOLED Plus technology. New gadget will be based on a single-chip system (Qualcomm APQ8060), equipped with dual CPU 1.2 GHz and Android operating system version 2.3. New technologies enlist the support of NFC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and HSPA +. Memory capacity is 16 GB ROM, RAM - 1 GB. Of course, my four-year-old son’s hands aren’t always the cleanest, nor is he the most careful. Fortunately, Takara Tomy has created the “First Digital Camera” made exclusively for his age group.

Best of all, this camera is durable, not like your iPad or Samsung Galaxy Tab. According to my Source, the viewfinder is placed above the pane, so the shot might be slightly off. I wonder if a toddler will quickly adapt to that. I’m guessing the answer is yes.

LG Crystal

LG are known for their original and creative phone ideas and the LG Crystal is another unique design. This is the first mobile to have a completely transparent keyboard. The phone, not being too dissimilar to the Samsung Tocco Ultra, consists of a touch screen user interface combined with a slide down keypad. The main difference from the Samsung though is that the crystal has a completely touch sensitive keypad as well. There are no separate keys with just a flat, see-through surface with numbers etched in.

The main display, as well as being touch screen has a very high resolution 800 x 480 pixels and 16 million colours as well as the actual size of the screen is quite impressive also being 3” diagonal. The features on this phone are also pretty cool such as the ability to draw a character on the screen to access your music, inbox, etc even if they are a slight bit gimmicky. But you can’t help but feel that with a price of up to £350 SIM-free LG could have given you something a little more special.

One problem that I have found after a couple of weeks of use is that when texting, you have the option of an on-screen QWERTY keyboard which is good and easily accessible but sometimes it locks up and you have to exit your text to unfreeze the phone.

Although the transparent keypad looks snazzy and is a great show off at the pub the original and cool design took all of 10 seconds for the novelty to wear off and for the £350 phone to slip into my pocket to be used just as I used my old, reasonably priced one.

To conclude, the new LG Crystal is a cool new design that could definitely be developed and the features are all quite neat concepts with a pretty good camera. The only drawback with this original mobile is the massive price tag associated with a phone that doesn’t quite give me all I wanted for the money I splashed out.

Aiptek - Mobile Cinema Projector D10

Most significant forms of IT-related technology had their main price drop some years ago, but digital projectors came to the party late in the day and it's only in the last year or two we've seen a plunge in prices.

One of the reasons for this is a new technology for the main functioning parts of the projector. Rather than having a bright projector lamp, an LCD panel and a spinning light wheel, which is expensive, relatively delicate, short-lived and runs hot, we're beginning to see LED projectors, where a matrix of active colour LEDs replaces the traditional three-part system.

The disadvantage of LED projectors so far has been their relatively low brightness, restricting them to pocket and fun devices. Aiptek's Mobile Cinema D10 is portable, but it's a step up in the brightness league. This 180 x 195 x 150mm, cuboid plastic box is only rated at 13 ANSI lumens, around a hundredth of the output of typical business projectors, but is bright enough for some domestic uses.

The D10 is designed as a replacement for a TV in a child's, or possibly a student's, bedroom. It has a DVD player built in and is intended purely for playing movies or Karaoke. Controls are very simple, with a set of four big buttons on the back for DVD playback and a large lever on the left-hand side for focusing.

There's a socket on the right-hand side for power, which comes from an L-shaped black-block power supply. To fulfil its Karaoke role it has an external jack for a microphone, but alas no Karaoke DVD, so you'll have to get this elsewhere if you want to sing along.

Even though the LED projector runs much cooler than a conventional halogen lamp, there's still an internal fan, which runs all the time and makes a noticeable noise. The picture, which is claimed to be usable up to a screen diagonal of 50 inches, is much happier at around 30 inches and even then you'll want to dim the lights.

Given all that, the output from the projector is acceptable for casual viewing. With a resolution of 480 x 240, HD is out and even VGA is some way off, but for untaxing content it's a far cheaper and safer solution than an LCD TV. It's a shame there's no way of getting a signal into it from a Freeview or Sky box, as this absence does make it a single-function gadget.

Nokia N97

The Nokia N97 wouldn't be such a disappointing device if it weren't supposed to be the flagship multimedia smartphone for the largest handset manufacturer in the world. It has some great specs, including that impressive 32GB of storage (expandable to 48GB), a solid, smart design, and hefty battery power. The performance of the Nokia N97 is based purely on the demo version but I have to say I'm quite impressed. It looks like Nokia has fine tuned the Symbian OS to work well with touchscreen. On the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, you won't get much of the swiping and flicking finger action but they've refined it so that you can get that much out of the Nokia N97. Also, compared with the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic demo version, the Nokia N97 interface is quite fast and responsive. You can barely see any hiccup on the accelerometer transition or when you're navigating the Symbian OS. The user interface on the Nokia N97 is also quite new but is still very user-friendly. Like I said, it's touch optimized and there are a lot of widgets you can play with. The built-in browser also looks promising though I wasn't able to see if it supports YouTube desktop PC version. Scrolling through webpages isn't as smooth and fluid as when you're surfing the Safari Browser on the iPhone but the webpages renders quickly though I don't know if that's because the pages that the person demonstrating the phone is already saved and bookmarked on the phone's memory.

The Nokia N97 also supports TV Out, WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, GPS, FM radio, and a 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics. If the camera on the Nokia N97 is as good as that on the Nokia N95 then I'm sure that the Nokia N97 won't have any problems when it comes to its camera software. The Nokia N97 runs on Quadband GSM networks and supports 3G/HSDPA.

GADGET is a freely available code for cosmological N-body/SPH simulations on massively parallel computers with distributed memory. GADGET uses an explicit communication model that is implemented with the standardized MPI communication interface. The code can be run on essentially all supercomputer systems presently in use, including clusters of workstations or individual PCs. GADGET computes gravitational forces with a hierarchical tree algorithm (optionally in combination with a particle-mesh scheme for long-range gravitational forces) and represents fluids by means of smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH). The code can be used for studies of isolated systems, or for simulations that include the cosmological expansion of space, both with or without periodic boundary conditions. In all these types of simulations, GADGET follows the evolution of a self-gravitating collisionless N-body system, and allows gas dynamics to be optionally included. Both the force computation and the time stepping of GADGET are fully adaptive, with a dynamic range which is, in principle, unlimited.

GADGET can therefore be used to address a wide array of astrophysically interesting problems, ranging from colliding and merging galaxies, to the formation of large-scale structure in the Universe. With the inclusion of additional physical processes such as radiative cooling and heating, GADGET can also be used to study the dynamics of the gaseous intergalactic medium, or to address star formation and its regulation by feedback processes. There have also been older versions of the code that supported the special-purpose hardware GRAPE, in the form of GRAPE-3 and GRAPE-6.

However, this functionality is not included in the current version at the moment. Authors and History GADGET has been written by Volker Springel over the last couple of years. The first public version (GADGET-1, released in March 2000), was created as part of Volker's PhD project at the Max-Planck-Institute for Astrophysics, Garching, Germany, under the supervision of Simon White. Later, the code was continuously impoved during postdocs of Volker Springel at the CfA and the MPA, in collaboration with Simon White and Lars Hernquist. The second public version (GADGET-2, released in May 2005), contains most of these improvements, except the numerous physics modules developed for the code that go beyond gravity and ordinary gas-dynamics. The first versions of the code in 1998 were originally designed for serial machines only, targeting primarily problems of galaxy collisions and interactions, which explains GADGET's somewhat contrived acronym. The parallel tree code was also developed during the year 1998, with the first parallel version of SPH added during the end of 1999. For the latter part, Naoki Yoshida (at the time another PhD-student at MPA) joined Volker Springel's efforts, and helped developing and testing the parallel SPH algorithms. In 2001-2003, GADGET-2 was created. The new code forms a nearly complete rewrite of GADGET-1, including a replacement of all core algorithms with new methods. The most important changes lie in a new time integration model, a new tree-code module, a new communication scheme for gravitational and SPH forces, a new domain decomposition strategy, a novel SPH formulation based on entropy as indepedent variable, and finally, in the addition of the TreePM functionality.
